Vlog #4: I've Got To Get Out Of College

<![CDATA[So I'm back from Cuba now, and the first week of classes has been a mess of indecision. I've switched classes, dropped, then picked back up, and then dumped them again. I've purchased only one book so far, and thankfully that's a great thing because I got out of the $300+ purchase that freakin Chemistry was gonna cost me. I'm currently in the process of getting myself on track to graduate in April with a Bachelors of Science in Film and Video Production from the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University... Sounds really sweet when you say it like that right? In truth, I'm on my way to finally being rid of this whole college thing. I've spent far too much time in school, and although I'm a bit nervous about living life after school (because a life with school is all I've ever known), I'm prepared to move on to the next chapter of my life as fast as possible. I know many people say they miss college, and I probably will miss parts of it too, but in the end, I know I'd be happier if I wasn't a student right now. There is just something wrong with the way the system is set up. It seems to be set up to pull money out of students. I hate that. I've spoken to a lot of professors that honestly feel the same way, and we've had many great discourses about the flaws in how things are set up for students. Topics like the price of textbooks, and the unethical revisions that are designed to make great textbooks obsolete and worthless for no other reason than to get you to buy the same thing over again. Things like the general education requirements at the university, and how students are forced to spend thousands of dollars on material that is highly unlikely to be useful to them in their future. The principal of a rounded liberal education is great; the execution is bureaucratic and harmful to a student's future. I hear claims that the university is broke... the giant renovations and large multi-million dollar construction projects taking place on campus says otherwise. This vlog is a rant, and it's all about that. [charliead]]]>
