I'm pretty sure that the wounded magistrate that you brutally immolated was helping children to escape Fort Joy. That's why the others were torturing him.
Sebille is somewhat worthless in fights (except to hang back and clean up in the mid-late fight) until you get a combo like:
Flesh Sacrifice – Backstab attack – Adrenaline Rush – backstab (now the target should be stripped of physical armor) – Chicken Claw – Cloak (invisibility)
Plus with a couple points in Warfare for the 2 knockdowns, the Scoundrel mobility skill and the "wings" skill from Polymorph she should almost never die.

Taking on a fight that you're slightly under-equipped for at that time is a great learning experience, especially on tactician mode, and it's so satisfying when you finally win.
