Good fighting. Idk how this game handles shotguns but they ARE super accurate in general. People use them to hunt birds that are flying several dozen meters up in the air, so you can deduct how small the spread is IRL.
EDIT: meter is around 3.3 feet so that translates as about a hundred feet.
I didn't think it was your dog until you pointed it out.
You can detonate the tanks and other weak spots on elites but they are more resilient and usually requires you to destroy some of their armor first (the white pips on top of their health bar). Just keep pumping shots into heads and they go down somewhat easily. Just mind your surroundings, getting flanked will get you dead really fast in that game.
As for the shotguns at range, when firing shot you can put chokes in a shotgun that limits it's spread – improving both accuracy and effectiveness at range. When firing slugs you don't need that since it's just one big projectile. You are correct that bird-shot (tiny pellets) probably wouldn't be as effective at longer ranges but there are other types of shot, buck-shot in various configurations comes to mind. Double-aught (#00) for instance has eight to twenty .33 caliber (or inch) pellets in a 12 gauge shotgun depending on shell length. Those things kept in a full choke can put some serious hurting on any target even out to 50 yards.
