Kerbal Space Program [1.1.2] – Ep 25 – Interplanetary Probe Part 2 – Let’s Play

Conquering Kerbal Space Program EPISODE 25: In this episode, I investigate our connection problems, and learn a bit more about how RemoteTech works, and the limitations and weaknesses behind long-range dishes… and once that’s sorted out, I grab the SCIENCE!

The ultimate goal of my Conquering Kerbal Space Program series is to put a fully 100% self-sufficient base (closed-loop) on the surface of every planet in the stock solar system (orbital station on gas giant). We’re running with TAC Life Support and RemoteTech as well, to spice up the difficulty here.

New Episodes will be posted here when they are edited and available, and may take different forms and pace as time goes on. A link to a full post covering the episode will be linked as the first thing in this description if available.

Kerbal Space Program isn’t your typical game, and as we’re going to find out together, it’s a real challenge, and it doesn’t hold your hand or tell you really how to do anything… and that’s what I LOVE about this!

I hope you enjoy this series as much as I do. This will be a heavily modded play-through with the new KSP 1.1.x version, in 64-bit mode! Woot!

Mod list is located at and may change as time goes on. The mod list will always be updated to what I’m using in the latest recording (not upload), and may not actually reflect the mods active in individual videos.

  1. Howdy. You may be looking for the Camera Focus Changer mod. With it you mouseover a part and type O, and the camera will focus there. Also, in another playthrough I heard that Chatterer generates the science transmission sound. IIRC that's where you find that toggle.

  2. Ah, the issues with dishes, when you're too far from Kerbin for omnidirectional antennas but the dish antenna cones don't subtend the entire planet yet. -_-
I did something a bit roundabout to deal with this issue once: I put interplanetary relays out 60° ahead and behind Kerbin in solar orbit, at the same orbital distance as Kerbin. On each of these relays there's multiple dish antennas: one pointed at every planet and one more pointed at the active vessel, then a bunch of Gigantors to power it (in solar orbit you'll never go through a shadow).
Whenever I sent out a new interplanetary mission, I'd have a long range dish on the probe point at one of these relays as it leaves Kerbin's SOI, to avoid the issue of the cones not being wide enough to encompass the entirety of Kerbin until the probe was millions of km away. Nasty signal delay, but it's better than no contact at all, and it's not like you need to be making any split-second maneuvers in interplanetary space.
